Small Chinese 'cizhou' russet-splashed black-glazed jar, Song dynasty
POA
Description
Small Chinese 'cizhou' russet-splashed black-glazed jar, Song dynasty, of depressed globuar form with a wide lip, the lustrous dark glaze splashed with russet, the foot ring left unglazed, revealing the buff stoneware body of the vessel.
Dimensions:
Height: 11cm. (4 5/16 in.)
Condition:
Good
Notes:
This is a good example of Song dynasty dark brown iron-rich glaze, with the russet splashes containing a higher content of iron. Iron-rich brown glazes had their roots in the Tang dynasty, but Song developments in glaze and kiln technology enabled the refinement of technique and greater control over design. See N. Wood, Chinese Glazes - Their Origins, Chemistry and Recreations, London/Philadelphia, 1999, p. 142.
Provenance:
From the Morpugo Collection.
