Description
Japanese Imari baluster jar, Edo period, late 17th century, with wide shoulders tapering to a narrow foot, decorated in overglaze enamels to the body with a garden containing pavillions amongst chrysanthemum and other flowering plants, with hoho birds in flight overhead; the shoulders with a collar of petal-shaped panels bordered in blue with foliate gilt scroll, containing alternating 'kacho-e' (birds and flowers) vignettes, with either a pair of quail amongst millet or sparrows in flight amongst flowering grasses, below a narrow band of peony amongst karakusa scroll, the foot with a further bands of flowers and scrollwork in iron-red; the short neck with peony heads against an elaborate gilt scrolling ground.
