Description
Japanese blue and white tankard, circa. 1680, with rounded belly and strap handle, the body decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with two long shaped panels topped each topped with a lotus flower, both containing landscape scenes; one with an elderly gentleman strolling with a parasol, a fan held in his right hand, with a young attendant and dog in a hilly woodland landscape amongst pine, grasses and a tall flowering tree, the other with a waterside scene with a pair of ducks swimming on a river, further birds perching in the shrubbery in the foreground and another pair of birds along with a large wading bird in flight overhead, all in a hilly landscape scene with a small dwelling amongst trees on the opposite shore and tall mountains in the distance behind which can be seen the rising sun; all set against a ground with dense karakusa scroll, the strap handle with further scrollwork, the rim and footrim with double circles.
Condition: Shallow chip to rim restored to a high standard
