Description
Chinese Verte Imari dish, Kangxi (1662-1722), decorated to the central roundel with a jardinière containing pine, chrysanthemum and peony, encircled by a narrow blue band with gilt diaper decoration and six alternating cartouches containing either a winged insect or a chrysanthemum head, the cavetto and rim with three reserve cartouches containing phoenix or a butterfly in a fenced garden with small florets and framed by sections of black enamel, against a blue ground scattered with chrysanthemum and sprays of prunus, the reverse with three floral boughs and a narrow band of green and iron-red enamel diaper with large chrysanthemum heads and four alternating cartouches containing crustaceans and fish amongst sprigs of pine to the rim.

Notes: A similar dish can be found in the collection of the British Museum (Franks.382). Chinese Imari dishes were initially based on Japanese models as Chinese potters and merchants responded to European demand for a type of richly decorated export ware made in Arita and shipped to the Dutch trading post at Nagasaki from the port of Imari.
