Description
Chinese famille rose melon tureen and cover, Qianlong (1736-95), in the form of a melon, with applied vine stems and leaves, decorated with scattered sprigs and sprays of flowers, the finial in the form of a cherry.
Dimensions:
Height: 10cm. (4 1/8in.); length: 11cm. (4 1/4in.)
Condition: Restoration to tendrils, chip to stalk, frit to base and fritting to rim of cover.
Notes:
Many examples of 18th century melon tureens were made in English pottery and creamware and are thought to have been based upon Meissen and silverware prototypes. Such items may have been intended as dessert-course novelty items.
