Chinese blue and white klapmutz bowl, Kangxi (1662-1722), decorated with four scenes from the ‘Romance of the Western Chamber’ below an everted rim with diamond pattern band, the interior decorated with a central roundel containing boys playing in a landscape, the inner rim with a diaper pattern, with Kangxi mark to the base; condition: good [very minor glaze marks to interior, slight wear to footrim] The Romance of the Western Chamber is China’s most popular love story, telling the travails of the poor, aspiring young scholar Zhang and the beautiful Yingying, the daughter of a high-ranking official. After many romantic experiences and dramatic difficulties, the two lovers eventually get married.
