A Japanese Satsuma tea caddy with inner and outer cover

POA

Description

A Japanese Satsuma tea caddy with inner and outer cover by the Kinkozan workshop, c.1890-1900, of square section with recessed panels finely painted with a cockerel and hen underneath bamboo, a landscape with horses, a group of armed men in mountainous terrain and a hawk with blossom and chrysanthemum; all against a densely gilded midnight blue ground, signed, condition: tiny chip to outer cover. The workshop of the Kinkozan family in Kyoto was one of the largest producers of ‘Kyo-Satsuma’ – Kyoto’s response to the huge demand for delicately painted Japanese pottery in the West. This trend was in part due to the 1873 Vienna International Exhibition, at which Satsuma wares were displayed.
