Description

A substantial medieval gilt bronze pectoral cross.

French, first half of the 15th century.

Measures 10.5 x 8cm.

The front of the cross is set with a figure of the crucified Christ, the arms are engraved with wriggle-work sunburst decoration and with fleur-de-lis to the corners. The arms on the reverse of the cross are engraved with the gothic letters ‘𐌼-𐌰-𐍂-𐌾’, which is an abbreviation of Maria, the mother of Christ, there is a historic loss to the central section.
