Description
Pair of Japanese Imari chargers, circa 1700, each decorated to the central roundel with a rocky riverside scene with trees, plantain, a pagoda and a pavilion within a narrow blue band with meandering foliate pattern in gilt to the cavetto, the wide rims with four alternating scrolling cartouches containing cherry and peony heads against a gilt ground, with vignettes in reserve between the cartouches, of either watery landscapes with prunus and a waterfall, or chrysanthemum with foliage and small blossoming flowers; the reverse with floral meander to the rim, several sets of concentric circles in underglaze blue and a central floral spray to the base.
