Description

Pair of Chinese ribbed ovoid jars, Kangxi (1662-1722), the bodies each with two roundels containing scholarly accoutrements including archaic bronze censers, scrolls, artemisia leaf, a ruyi-head sceptre and precious beribboned babao, all between two bands of scrolling lotus to the neck and foot reserved in white on a blue ground.

Height: 13.4cm. (5 1/4in.)

Condition: One jar with chip to rim and associated hairline crack

Notes: The assortment of objects decorating these vases are some of the ‘hundred antiques’, a symbolic collection of scholarly accoutrements and auspicious Buddhist emblems. Commonly employed in ceramic and textile design during the Kangxi period, the hundred antiques motif celebrated good taste, education and the refined aesthetic appreciation of the gentleman collector.
