Description

Chinese famille rose 'commode' bough-pot, Qianlong (1736-95), in the form of a mid-18th century bombe commode, the front decorated with two wide drawers and two short drawers, against a leiwen ground, the top with five holes with a portion of raised flower decoration and scrollwork

Height: 12.5cm. (4 15/16in.); width: 21.7cm. (8 1/2in.)

Condition:

Restored handle and six hair cracks neatly consolidated.

Notes:
Such bulb pots were filled with water, and the bulbs rested on the holes with their roots in the water for nourishment. The shape is modelled after European faience originals. A similar pot can be seen in the MET Museum Collection; accession no. 51.86.104. For an illustrated example see Howard & Ayers, 'China for the West', Vol. II, p. 572, pl. 594.
