Chinese blue and white ribbed caddy, Qianlong (1736-95), decorated in underglaze blue with a lake landscape, with pagodas on rocky islands planted with bamboo and other trees; figures in boats and fishing on the shore, the shoulders with peony sprays and wide band of flowerheads and cell-ground cartouches, the arched top with traces of gilding

Notes:
Tea caddies with curved tops were modeled on earlier metal types, used in Europe for storing and preserving valuable tea leaves. As Chinese gilding was considered to be of inferior quality, gilding was often added to export wares later in English workshops. This design, with a typical idealised scene in the chinoiserie style, was probably based on European interpretations of Chinese landscapes.
