Description
Chinese blue and white kraak bowl, Wanli (1573-1619), with gently barbed rim and high tapering foot, decorated in underglaze cobalt blue to the exterior with eight panels containing plants and flowers including bamboo and flying insects amongst chrysanthemum, interspersed by long cartouches with dot and bracket motif, the interior with further panels containing a pattern composed of peaches and foliage, the central roundel with a calling bird perched on a rock, the tall foot encircled by a double circle.

A new lighter porcelain, highly transportable and thus an attractive option for overseas trade was developed at Jingdezhen in around 1580. Mass produced in standardised shapes, such as the bottle vase form represented here, these wares became known as 'kraak' after the Dutch 'carrack' trading ships.
