Description
Chinese blue and white brush pot, Kangxi (1662-1722), the sides slightly concave, decorated with four alternating cloud scroll-cornered panels containing either ogee cartouches containing a tripod ding-form incense burner and repeated ‘shou’ character variations against a floral hexagonal cell ground, or larger cells containing further ‘shou’ variations

Notes:
The tradition of repeating the ‘shou’ character in different forms as a kind of auspicious talisman has a long history in Chinese ceramic art, carving and calligraphy. The earliest example is a 13th century stone carving in Guanxi Province.
