Description
Canton enamel box in the shape of a butterfly, Qianlong (1736 - 95), its body and outstretched wings decorated in bright colours with radiating and swirling patterns, the rim with scrolling green leafwork and flowerheads including orchid and peony.

Condition:
Some areas of enamel loss and damage; it appears that part may be missing
Notes:
In Chinese, the second character in butterfly, ‘die’ in ‘hudie’ is a homonym with the character for 80 years of age, thus the insect is symbolic of a long life.
