Description
A Worcester cider jug, circa 1753-4, of 'Scratch Cross' type and of plain pear shape, the scroll handle with spur thumbrest, painted in translucent enamels with a lady taking tea at a table, another figure in attendance, a bird perched on a hoop above, the reverse with a 'Long Eliza' figure of a lady standing beside a garden seat

Small chip to rim and tiny frits to spout
Notes:
Illustrated by Zorka Hodgson in her book The Origins of some Chinese Designs used on Early Worcester, ECC Trans. Vol 12, Part 3 (1986), pl 114 c and d, together with a print by Chen Hongshou (1598-1652), titled 'Parrot on a Perch' which may have been an inspiration for Chinese porcelain decorators. The shape of the jug derives from early silver. Another example is in the Klepser Collection see Simon Spero (1984), fig 31, colour pl 12 and another from the Frank Wheeldon Collection, was sold at Bonhams, 23 January 2008, lot 67
