Description
A Chinese enamel teapot and cover with looped fixed handle, Qianlong (1736-95), the lobed body painted in enamels in the famille rose palette with large lobed cartouches containing birds and insects perching on various flowers, set against a ground of alternating floral cell pattern, the gently curving spout with blue foliate scroll, the neck with a blue leiwen band, the top with further floral cartouches set against a yellow basket-pattern ground, the handle with yellow oyster-shell and blue basket patterns and three small floral cartouches; the base with 'shou' symbol within a blue roundel.
Notes: This piece was loaned by the vendors to be included in an exhibition of Chinese Painted Enamel at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford in 1978, curated by Michael Gillingham.
Provenance: John Sparks Ltd. Purchased by the vendors in the 1970s.
