Description
Japanese lacquer portable water bottle with handle, 19th century, in wood decorated in black lacquer and gold, of tall rectangular form with each of the four sides painted in gold with birds in flight amongst bamboo.
Dimensions:
Height: 33cm. (13in.)
Notes:
Portable water containers such as this were used during the tea ceremony to store fresh drinking water. While containers were occasionally made from lacquer rather than pottery, generally they are of wider, more bucket-like form; the shape of this example is more unusual.
