Description
Chinese jade pig, late Qing, the body carved into a recumbent animal with its head resting on its front hooves and hind legs tucked under its body, the tail curling around the left haunch, length: 2 in. (5 cm). The pig is a symbol of abundance and prosperity; it is the last animal in the Chinese zodiac and represents hai, the last of the twelve earthly branches. Along with the sheep, cow, chicken and dog, the pig is one of the original five domesticated animals of the Chinese.
