Description
Chinese famille rose oval tureen and cover, Qianlong (1736-95), the base with shell-shaped handles and decorated to either side with a pair of peacocks wandering in a flower garden amongst rockwork and large blooms of peony, all between a band of lambrequin spear heads to the footrim and a gilt patterned band with narrow cartouches in underglaze blue to the rim; the lid with similar bands and floral sprays with lotus and tropical blooms, surmounted by a flame finial.

Notes:
King Joao VI of Portugal is known to have owned a service in this pattern. When Napoleon invaded Portugal in 1807, King Joao (who was Prince Regent at this time) fled to Brazil, taking his six services of Chinese porcelain with him, including one of this same design. The pattern is known as 'Serviço dos Pavões' in Brazil, and there are several examples in the collections of Brazilian museums today.
