Notes:
The scene on this vase is possibly taken from the episode of The Romance of the Three Kingdoms in which Zhuge Liang (Kongming) descends from the mountains with Liu Bei (Xuande) to become his advisor and help him to form the third of the kingdoms. A Ming painting depicting the scene can be found in the collection of the Shanghai Museum and was included in the 2010 exhibition 'Telling Images of China' at the Chester Beatty Library'. A famille-rose Yongzheng dish depicting the same scene was part of the Russell Tyson Collection at the Art Institute of Chicago and was sold at Christies on the 17th of September 2019.
