Description
Chinese blue and white plate, Kangxi (1662-1722), decorated to the central roundel with two European gentlemen greeting each other in a garden with grasses and prunus issuing from rockwork with birds overhead and two tables with a jardiniere of peony and cracked ice vase containing a floral arrangement, each raising his hat to the other while two attendants look on, one holding a pipe and cap, the other a wine bottle; the cavetto with birds in flight amongst blossoming plum, the rim with sixteen alternating cartouches containing pairs of birds and a bird perching upon a branch of flowering peony, all within a narrow leiwen band; the reverse with four floral sprigs and central Kangxi mark within a double circle
Diameter: 21cm (8 1/4in.)
Condition: Hairline to the rim (approx. 6 cm.) and three chips to the rim and some minute frits
Notes:
A very similar example is illustrated in 'European Scenes on Chinese Art', Jorge Welsh (London, 2005) pp.30-31. The author observes that 'apart from the present dish, there are only a few other examples recorded'.
