Description
Chinese blue and white jar and cover, Kangxi (1662-1722), decorated to the body with four central roundels containing chrysanthemum head and scrolling leafwork, with spearheaded bands containing lotus blossom below and above; the lid with a lobed floral design.

Small chip to rim and tiny chips to footrim, stress crack (only visible from inside).
Notes:
The chrysanthemum is one of the ‘four flowers of the seasons’ and represents autumn. It is famously mentioned in the Zhou Dynasty Book of Rites, which tells of the fourth century BC Chinese Poet Tao Yuan Ming, who famously refused a position in the government and returned to his garden, stating that he preferred to pick chrysanthemums and get drunk with friends over high government office. Consequently, the flower has come to symbolise easy life and joviality.
