Description
A Chinese yen-yen vase with elongated neck, Kangxi (1662-1722), decorated with branches of peony and grasses issuing from rockwork, flying insects overhead, the shoulders with broad band of floral scroll against an iron red ground, the slender neck with further floral sprays and flying insects below a flared rim with a band of red cell ground.
Height: 38cm. (15 in.)
Condition:
Damage to the rim and chips to the base neatly restored

In Chinese, yen-yen vases are referred to as ‘fengweizun’, which translates to ‘phoenix-tail’ and alludes to their narrow neck and flaring rim. The name ‘yen-yen’ stems from the Cantonese ‘yan’ (craving), and reflects the European appetite for such export wares.
