Description
Of circular section and unusual ribbed form, decorated in famille verte enamels and formed in ridged registers of 'bamboo cane' ribs, the lowest with a band of lotus scroll beneath a band of diaper pattern with reserved floral cartouches, topped by a band of lotus scroll reserved in white against a red ground, the pattern repeating on the cover, which has a further band of diaper pattern with reserved floral cartouches, and again a band of lotus scroll reserved in white against a red ground, the cover with a conical finial covered in green enamel, the base glazed.
LITERATURE
There is an almost identical jar and cover in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, museum number AK-NM-6439-B. This jar is illustrated in Christiaan Jorg, Chinese ceramics in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam: the Ming and Qing dynasties, p.174, pl.194, where the author notes the rarity of this form.
There is a jar and cover of the same ribbed form in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, museum number C.17&A-1958. Theirs has silver mounts, and the decoration differs, however the floral decoration is reserved against a coloured ground in a similar way to ours.
