History:
Stuart Devlin, a renowned Australian silversmith and goldsmith, was born in 1931 and became one of the most innovative and influential designers of the 20th century. He began his career studying art and goldsmithing in Melbourne before winning a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Art in London. This move marked the beginning of his international acclaim.
In 1965, Devlin established his own studio in London, where he quickly gained a reputation for his distinctive and modern approach to silver and gold design. He became known for his intricate, textured surfaces and inventive forms, often drawing inspiration from nature and mythology. His work included a wide range of items, from jewellery and silverware to large-scale commissions and ceremonial pieces.
One of Devlin's most significant achievements was his appointment as the goldsmith and jeweller to Queen Elizabeth II in 1982, a testament to his exceptional craftsmanship and contribution to the field. His designs for the British royal family and other high-profile clients further solidified his status as a leading figure in the world of precious metalwork.
Devlin also made notable contributions to numismatics, designing coins for over 30 countries, including the distinctive decimal coinage for Australia introduced in 1966. His designs are celebrated for their artistic quality and attention to detail.
Throughout his career, Stuart Devlin received numerous awards and honours, including an Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1980 for his services to design. His legacy continues to influence contemporary goldsmiths and silversmiths, and his works are highly sought after by collectors worldwide. Devlin passed away in 2018, leaving behind a rich legacy of innovative and beautifully crafted pieces.
