Silver Half Hunter Verge

£650.00

Description

A 19th Century English verge in silver half hunter pair cases. Full plate fire gilt fusee movement with round pillars. Pierced and engraved masked cock, engraved gilt plate, blue steel disc for regulation, with the index on the top plate. Plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. Half hunter style white enamel dial with two concentric chapters of Roman numerals, only the inner chapter visible unless the front cover is opened. Gold half hunter hands. Matching silver pair cases, the inner with a broad border to the front bezel, small glazed aperture at the centre. Silver oval pendant and bow, maker’s mark “V.R” in an oval.

Pair cased half hunter watches are uncommon. William Terry, Masham (Yorkshire), 1770 - 1840. Probably also at Thoralby and Bedale. The casemaker's mark is for Vale and Rotheram of Coventry who manufactured watches from the late 18th Century onwards. Movements by them often incorporate this unsual form of regulator. This suggests the watch was retailed by William Terry.
