Description

A late 18th Century English verge in an unusual gold and enamel consular case. Full plate fire gilt fusee movement. Pierced and engraved cock with diamond endstone in a polished steel setting, engraved foot and plate for the silver regulator disc. Plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. Winding through the white enamel dial, Roman and Arabic numerals, gold beetle and poker hands. Unusual gold and enamel consular case, the bezels decorated with raised iridescent enamel dots to imitate split pearls. The back in translucent deep maroon enamel over a decorative engine turned ground bordered by a row of small white enamel dots. Sprung gold bezel opened by a pin at three, gold pendant and bow. Gold key, the engraved centre of two chased sheets, gold wire border. Fitted in a gilt tooled red morocco box signed “Asprey & Company”.

An attractive watch in excellent overall condition. Using enamel to create the effect of split pearls is not common. This example is very unusual as the enamel used is semi-transparent and iridescent to more closely match pearls.
