Description
A most unusual version of a giardinetti ring, circa 1780. Flowers were a fashionable theme in jewellery from 1750 to 1800. Intricate and colourful rings were known as giardinetti (little gardens) or in England as ‘flowerpots’. They had tiny blossoms set with an assortment of precious stones arranged in a basket, vase or pot. It was usual for the diamonds to be set in silver at this date as the whiteness of the metal enhanced the diamonds. This giardinetti has a high carat gold ribbed shank with diamond shoulders supporting a plaque set with a ground of vibrant foiled cobalt blue glass in the firmament style. The plaque is surmounted by a giardinetti flower pot arrangement of rose-cut and old-cut diamonds, set silver. The ring is size O [US 7] and the head of the ring measures jut under one inch by 2/3 of an inch. Superior quality and immaculate.
