Description
Extremely fine Japanese Satsuma earthenware vase of a shouldered ovoid shape by Okamoto Ryozan, Meiji Period (1868-1912), enamelled with in different colours with a cloudy mountainous landscape with a river, in the foreground groups of people in various pursuits amongst trees including pineand cherry blossom; also shrubbery including various flowers, further afield houses and trees in the mountains beyond, all between gilt cellular key-fret borders, the base border of interlocking ogee panels alternatively filled with flower heads and cells in gilt, the shoulder similarly decorated. The base signed Okamoto Ryozan in iron-red and gilt for the Yasuda Company in Kyoto. This vase probably commemorates the Spring Festival or the hanami
