ANTIQUE KASHMIRI SILVER TEA CADDY, LOTUS, INDIA, ISLAMIC INTEREST C.1900
ANTIQUE KASHMIRI SILVER TEA CADDY, LOTUS, INDIA, ISLAMIC INTEREST C.1900
£1,250.00
Description
A fine and quite unusual antique Indian solid silver tea caddy, with a hinged lid, from the Kashmir region, which dates to around 1900.
Although the overall shape of the caddy would be described as pear shaped, once the lid has been lifted, the body more resembles the shape of a tulip. The pointed edges of the tulip flower also bring to mind the lotus, abundant in the lakes of the region, which was so often featured in Kashmiri silver design.
The body of the caddy is comprised of panels of floral decoration and rests on an elaborate sculpted and pierced foot. The lid, which has also been decorated in panels of similar style, takes the form of an upturned lotus flower when viewed from above and is topped by a plain silver knob.
Kashmir was a very beautiful region of India, famed for its lakes covered in lotus flowers, mountains and wild flowers. In colonial times, it was a favourite place for Europeans seeking escape from the summer heat of the Indian plains to visit and they were enchanted by Kashmir’s beauty.
A lovely Kashmiri tea caddy!
