Antique Burmese Silver Bowl, Pierced Design - 19th Century
£2,400.00
Description
The bowl is decorated with fine pierced floral work and seven roundels containing embossed scenes.
Each roundel depicting figures in differing poses. A band of scrolling leaves towards the top and an acanthus leaf border to the bottom. The base has a pictorial ‘signature’ of a chased beast holding a sword.
Burmese silver bowls are based on the form of the ‘thabeik‘ or begging bowl. They were adapted for local Burmese aristocracy and European clients and eventually took on a more ornamental role. This bowl has been embellished by the silversmith with pierced work, chasing and repousse.
