A Russian silver gilt tankard, Moscow circa 1745.
Makers mark Cyrillic ‘BMO’, indistinct assaymaster’s mark.
Cylindrical, on three ball feet, the body and hinged cover with four cartouches engraved with scene of Samson and Delilah: the body depicting Samson departing to the cities of the Philistines, his wedding banquet, and Delilah cutting Samson’s locks as he sleeps; the cover depicting Samson seduced by Delilah, each flanked by scrolling foliate or stiff-leaf border, the scroll handle with split flared thumb-piece, marked under base, also with indistinct scratch weight.
This exquisite piece was previously sold at Christies New York, in 2013, for $43,750
