Ancient Roman Intaglio of a parrot, Ca first century A.D. The gold mount is modern , ca 1900. Parrots were a rare but popular subjects in ancient times, symbolical of the exotic orient.See \"Dionysus Mosaic\", now in the Romisch Museum in Cologne from third century A.D. where a pair of parrots are harnessed to a miniature cart loaded with farm instruments. The farm tools are a seasonal reference, other birds appear on the mosaic as emblems of the seasons, parrots representing summer.They also represent the myth that Dionysus visited India and indeed on his triumphant return from there brought back the bird to Europe. Russian trompe l\'oeil silver basket / the word means \" to deceive the eye\"/. In the second part of the nineteenth century Russian silversmiths have produced this unique form of representative art work, silver objects made in the shape of everyday household articles IE a willow basket made in silver, a basket covered with a cloth also made in silver.
