Eighteenth century Blackamore ring
Late eighteenth century carved black onyx and diamonds \"blackamore\" ring. All original with the cameo and diamonds set into silver and the shank in gold.
As the slave trade expanded in the seventeenth century some black slaves were brought over into European Grand Houses to be used as domestic servants. Soon they appear in paintings , sculpture, and in various detail in the decorative arts. They represent the mysterious \"Orient\" , the exotic, or just as a show of wealth and \"sophistication\".
